My mother-in-law is the one who introduced me to pork steaks. It was love at first bite! In fact, I request pork steaks every time we are in town! While my cooking process is different, I keep the integrity of the hardy and flavorful steak. This guide on How to Make Pork Steaks is simple, easy, and oh-so-delicious! The steak is packed with flavor, is tender, juicy and even ready in 30 minutes! This recipe will excite everyone gathered around the table!
Pork Steaks seem to be another St. Louis style favorite. I’ve lived in 4 states and have only seen pork steaks in the St. Louis area of Missouri. All pork steaks are is pork shoulder cut into 3/4″ thick slabs. So while I’m at the grocery store, I’ll pick up a pork shoulder roast and ask my butcher to slice it. Most grocery stores and butchers will do this for you–it’s such a great hack!
Cooking Tips:
My guide for How to Cook Pork Steaks is for the stove top. However, you can also grill these steaks. Simply follow the marinade instructions, then adjust the cooking process as follows: All you need to do is pre-heat your grill to 400 degrees, and allow the steaks to cook for about 4 minutes each side, flipping twice, or until the internal temp reaches 145-155 degrees (depending on how well you like your pork steak cooked).
In this recipe I use a marinade for extra tender tender steaks! You can thank me later. 😉 The marinade is simple, you really only need it to sit for 2 hours (flipping halfway through). However, if you are pressed for time in your day, you can marinate these overnight, and flip in the morning so its ready for dinnertime. In this marinade I use coconut aminos, which is acidic, so don’t let them sit in the marinade longer than 24 hours.
We got 4 pounds of pork shoulder roast for $8 on sale at our local grocery store. It has lasted us dayyyyys (and then some)! Even if your butcher has pre-cut pork steaks, try looking for a pork shoulder roast instead because it is much cheaper to get the cut you want this way. It is pretty impressive, the quality of pork steak you can get for such a low price!

- 2 pounds pork steak or Pork Shoulder cut into 3/4" slices
- 5 tbsp avocado oil (2 for cooking on the skillet, 3 for the marinade)
- 3 tbsp coconut aminos
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 1/2 tsp Paprika
- 1/4 tsp Black pepper
- 1/4 tsp Salt
- 2 tbsp Chopped parsley optional

- To make the marinade, add all the all ingredients except the pork steak and 2 tbsp of avocado oil into a bowl. Whisk together.
- Pour the marinade into a large pan, place the pork steak on top and allow the pork steak to sit in the marinade for at least two hours, flipping half way in between. You can do this overnight as well.
- In a large pan, heat avocado oil on medium heat. You only need to do about 1/2 tbsp of oil per pork steak. (Also, I used two pans to make the cooking time more efficient.)
- Place pork steak on hot pan, and cook for about 4 minutes each side, flipping twice.
- Cook the pork steaks until the internal temp reaches 145-155 degrees (depending on how well you prefer yours cooked).
- Once to pork steak is cooked, set aside on a plate or platter and allow the meat to rest for about 10 minutes.
- Optional: Garnish the pork steak with chopped parsley.
- Serve and Enjoy!
